Joh Bates

Director

Joh’s empathic and hands-on approach is guided by a desire to create considered, long-lasting and beautiful places for people.

Her horticultural knowledge has been developed through more than 10 years of dedicated practice in the field, both as a trained gardener and landscape architect. Joh promotes landscape solutions that are both ecologically sensitive and practical. She is particularly interested in the sustainable management of trees and plants, encouraging cultivation that is true to their natural habits.

At Farrer Huxley Joh oversees operations and staff development, delivering support and clear direction for the team and projects alike. Her pragmatism is fundamental to the generation of realistic project proposals that allow schemes to endure and flourish. She advocates active discussion in the development of creative solutions which put people first.

Joh is a Trustee of Hospital Rooms, a charity that seeks to enhance patient wellbeing in mental health units through art and environmental design.

Joh loves to walk (fast), read and eat good food with friends. She is interested in nature, art (of others) and dance.
